It can be frustrating (or seemingly impossible!) to change.
Habit change is a herculean task no matter the habit you want to shift. It’s been a companion to you, helping you get by. It’s become part of who you are, and even when you logically can understand why you need to change it, it can feel impossible to do so.
I understand both personally and helping my clients transform outdated behaviors that no longer serve their higher purpose in as little as three sessions.
Habits can show up in many areas. Here are some of what you may experience:
Anger Issues – Driving down the road, someone makes a turn with no signal, and you are sent into code red, screaming, swearing, and completely enthralled in your case against this person.
Addiction – I help folks with everything from alcohol, narcotics, cigarettes, and any substance that has become a crutch and is no longer is an enjoyable addition to the day. You’re noticing you don’t feel as good. You now ‘need it’ and don’t feel the same without it. Mornings are more difficult, and you’re afraid others will find out. You may have tried to stop on your own, but you need help and a technique to do so.
Stress Management – Stress is a habit. Poor boundaries around work, personal relationships, kids – can become how we approach our day each day. This is a habit, much like a poor mindset – your crutch becomes how you cope with comes up. It’s served you well – but stress is taking its toll on your body, on your relationships, on your work.
Negative thinking – When we repeat the same negative thoughts repeatedly, we’re living in the past or fear of the future. Many of us have been taught that it’s best to ensure that nothing goes wrong as a sort of insurance. The problem is that it doesn’t work. What happens is that we rob the joy from our present moment with heavy thoughts that might not even be true – once this habit sets in, it becomes difficult to change the cycle.
Blocking Good Things from Happening – You’ve created beliefs such as “I’m not good enough, I’m not worthy of love, I don’t feel good in my body, my speaking voice is weird, money is difficult to make or save, I don’t make friends easily…” etc. These beliefs turn into your experience, and whether you know it or not, guide your behaviors. If we don’t explore and shift the deeper beliefs, we could have an opportunity right in front of your face, and you wouldn’t even notice it. I see it all the time, which is one of the most important elements of having a coach – someone who can help you see what’s right in front of you – your blindspot.
Being Afraid of the Unknown or Trying New things – Once you’ve been burnt by putting yourself out there to try new things, you believe that every new thing you want is out of reach or will hurt your future, income, relationships. This becomes a habit, one that is beneath the surface and can be challenging to discover and dissect. You’ll know it by an inability to take any risks in your career or personal life. The outcome is a life of mediocrity and eventually boredom.
One thing we can all agree on is how challenging it is to create lasting change. With the right techniques, self-discovery, and accountability, you CAN change any outdated habit that is holding you back. Once you take on the thing that is nagging you, like a cascade of possibility that runs through your life, your confidence to achieve other things will come back too. We’re capable of lasting change. You just have to know how.
It’s all about changing your habitual behaviors.
Habits are like the well-worn path to your car after it has snowed a few times. You wouldn’t shovel a new path each day, right? No… you use the one you’ve already shoveled out.
The brain works in much the same way, creating an efficient path toward an outcome.
The only problem: Habits are very easy to create and very difficult to change.
Change itself can be anxiety-provoking.
Simply attempting to create change can send you into anxiety, especially if what you’ve been doing has served as a coping mechanism.
The habits become resources and coping mechanisms that help you deal with challenges that come up in life. Whether it’s popping the TV on every night or eating more food than you need – neither one of these behaviors moves you toward your best self in life, but they soothe you from the stress of the day.
When we embark on a journey of transformation, we’re taking a step toward the unknown. We become naked in a sense; you have to spend that time doing something else, and it will feel foreign, not soothing. It can really put you into a stressful state – causing you to go backward and commit further to the thing that’s supported you, only to feel the wake of its negative full yet again. This cycle is exhausting, and it slowly chips away at your confidence.
Take the first step and get the help you need.
Your confidence in yourself comes back fast when you get to put your head on your pillow at night, knowing that you’ve made the changes you’ve been struggling with. Knowing how to get here can be tricky. The first step is simply admitting that doing what you’ve been doing isn’t getting you where you want to be.
See your blind spots.
Someone wise once said that you have to be humble enough to know that you don’t know everything. You’ll find that the more successful the person is, the more help they have to see what blind spots they’re working with.
It takes more than desire. You have to know what you’re doing!
You’ve been trying many things to fix the problem.
Using willpower, sheer force, trying diets, talking to a therapist, reading books, telling yourself positive affirmations, etc.
And let me guess: None of these “fixes” lasted.
Here’s the truth: When you don’t know how to create lasting change, you will not be successful. And each time it doesn’t happen, you’ll feel like a failure, and you’ll be just a little weaker the next time you step up to the plate to take another swing.
You have to get to the root of the experience, the driving force behind the belief, the behavior, the pain. Then you release it on a physical level – I help my client shift at a biological and chemical level, we see change, then we work with deeply held beliefs. With the accountability of someone you can trust – there’s nothing you cannot transcend.
Transpersonal coaching can help.
One of my areas of expertise is helping you tackle those gnarly little habits that keep you living at half-mast.
Engaging in self-inquiry…
We’ll look at the coping mechanisms that have brought you to where you are. Once you understand the root cause and the driving force behind your actions, you can shift them. Most of the time, modern solutions are looking to the effect, not the cause. You’ll never create the lasting change you’re after from this place.
Creating a plan…
We will create a personalized plan that will help you “master the moment.”
All decisions happen in the moment. No amount of planning can help you if challenges arise, and you’re ready to lean back into your old, outdated habit if you don’t have self-discipline. The technique I will teach you uses your imagination to help you master your choices at the moment.
Making it easy…
When you make it easy, it’s easy. We often aim to will things into being – to push ourselves – to will ourselves to change. But here’s the reality: The more we struggle to change, the more we establish a deeper tie to the thing we wish to change!
In clinging so tightly to a new reality or a new set of habits, you actually make it more difficult to solidify the change. When we fight to change, we empower the thing we seek to let go of. We hold more tightly to it, and we give it power over ourselves.
When you approach things from a more fluid, trusting, confident space, the change becomes easy, adaptive, and honest. You cannot force life. You can only dance with it.
Believe it or not, your job in this…
… is to trust my process, let go of expectations, and do the daily practice.
